Be Buttoned Up 03/02/10

img_9068-2

Back to school – it’s Shirts 101.  Whether you call them wovens, button-downs or button-ups, shirts are not only an essential ‘basic’ but can be a focal point for a stylish guy.  Whether stand alone or layered; the shirt can say a lot about the man.  Here are a few key guidelines you need to know when it comes to the shirt.

To Wear in or to Wear out?
Both are okay – but there are a few things you need to remember.  It’s cool to un-tuck for a casual night out or hanging with the guys.  Length is the key, make sure your shirt isn’t too long – don’t want to look like your wearing your girlfriend’s nightgown.  For business or for a more high-end occasion – start tucking.

It’s Hip to be Cheap (Save $$$ on dry cleaning)
Here’s the greatest tip of all time, check your label – as long as they don’t say ‘dry clean only,’ you can wash and go (just wash at home, hang it to dry) – you’ll end up with a great ‘worn in’ look without paying for dry cleaning.  You don’t even need to iron it – the wrinkled look is ‘in.’ It’s a win-win.

Be Current
Know this season’s style and work it into your wardrobe.  We’re not talking about Seinfeld’s puffy shirt, we swear!  But, the shirt is the star, this spring’s look is all about - bright colors, rich plaids and wrinkled fabrics.  For casual shirts look for great items from Steven Alan, Gant, Gitman Vintage, John Varvatos Star USA, Rag & Bone and our own Haberdash brand.   For dress shirts: our Haberdash private label dress shirts made by Gitman Bros. in Ashland, PA, feature classic construction and a trim-fit.   Shop our great selection of shirts in stock or choose from over 100 swatches and create your own custom shirt.

Hope you’ve learned a little and gained some inspiration.  If that wasn’t enough, we’re just about giving you the shirts off our back with a great deal.  Now through March 3, receive a $25 gift card to the store with every casual or dress shirt you purchase.

Make Her Day 02/02/10

Let’s face it guys, Valentine’s Day is all about making your lady happy.  Selecting a romantic restaurant and buying some flowers and candy is a no-brainer.  You’re expected to do at least that much.  If you really want to see a smile on her face when you pick her up, put some thought into your choice of clothing.  Every woman loves a dapper guy.  Here are some tips to ensure you are dressed appropriately for your special night out.  First, don’t wear anything you would normally wear to the bar on a Saturday afternoon to watch college basketball with your buddies.  This means absolutely no hats, hoodies or sneakers.  She sees you in this stuff everyday – time to step up your game.  If you’re taking her to a fancy spot, don’t be afraid to put on a suit.  Just be careful not to look like you’re going to a business meeting.  Pick a modern suit (flat front – no cuffs) with a slim cut – preferably black or navy.  Lose the tie and wear a shirt with some color (pink, purple, blue) and/or understated pattern (micro check, gingham, mini-plaid or stripe).  If you’re taking her to one of the new hip hot-spots – a suit may not be right.  Choose a pair of straight leg denim – the darker the better.  The same kind of shirt mentioned above is appropriate – just make sure you tuck it in.  A nice solid cashmere or merino wool v-neck sweater over the shirt will add a layered polished look.  Finish it off with a casual blazer or sportcoat.  Not a suit coat – these are generally cut too long and are not right with jeans.  Finally, don’t overlook your shoes.  That’s the first thing most women notice.    Now you’re looking good and ready to impress your lady.  Play your cards right and she may even reward you when you get home – if you know what I mean!

Workboot Revival 10/22/09

The classic American workboot is back - just in time for winter.  Although companies like Wolverine and Red Wing never really went away (they’ve been making boots for the American worker since 1883 and 1905, respectively) they have both introduced heritage work collections aimed at a whole new type of guy.

1000mile-workbootThe first of its kind, the Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot was created to provide durability and comfort.  Advertised as comfortable enough to “give you a 1,000 miles of wear,” the shoe became a must-have item for men of the 20th century.  Featuring leathers that are soft and supple with weathered tones, a stacked leather outsole and classic welt construction, the new 1000 Mile Boot has been meticulously desgined to replicate the original’s aesthetic.  — Available in Black and Brown - $325

ironranger-workbootNamed after the Mesabi Iron Range in Northern Minnesota, the main source of iron for American steel mills, the Red Wing Iron Ranger is as impressive and rugged as the land from which it takes its name.  The boot features sturdy Goodyear welt construction, cork under the insole for added comfort and a leather insole that molds to your foot as you wear them.  — Available in Amber Harness leather and Hawthorne Muleskinner suede - $298.

The Rebirth of Cool 09/12/09

Haberdash was recently featured on Urban Daddy about our new look, check the article out below:

A Change of Clothes
The Rebirth of Cool on Wells Street

You’ve got a friend—we all do—content to coast through life in nothing but graphic tees and that perfectly well-worn pair of jeans.

But now that it’s fall, it’s time for you to put that big brotherly, well-dressed arm around his shoulder and gently reintroduce him to some friends he knows and trusts: welcome to the newly reinvented Haberdash.

These are guys who understand him. Until very recently, they were him. But they spent a very introspective summer looking in their full-length mirrors, and figuring out how to become better men—or at least a better store, one worthy of the name Haberdash. (Better late…)

Now there’s a welcome feeling of grown-up-ness. (If we may use that invented word.) Maybe it’s the newly installed mahogany paneling, which makes the place look like something of a modern men’s club. But it’s probably the fact that the shop now carries everything from dress socks to office-ready Hugo Boss suits and even its own exclusive line of vintage-inspired button-downs.

Of course, you can still pick up some Japanese denim or a cool T-shirt for your Sunday afternoon patio crawls. But they’ll also hook you up with some sharp British brogues from Grenson to help you look your Clooney-est when Monday morning rolls around.

Because George was that guy once, too.
