Truefitt & Hill

Established: 1805  |  Country of Origin: England

William Francis Truefitt opened his first gentlemen’s barbershop in 1805. As was the fashion of the day, a significant part of his business came from wig making and grooming. In fact, the success and notoriety he found in his early years was primarily due to these superior skills. It didn’t take long for Truefitt’s reputation to grow and soon he had a thriving business in the heart of London’s fashionable West End. Perhaps the greatest nod to his ability in these early years was being made Court Hair Cutter, Court Hair Dresser and Wigmaker by Royal Appointment to His Majesty, King George III. Over the next century the Truefitt name became synonymous with high society. And while there were moves to different locations and changes in fashion, year after year, gentleman after gentleman, the Truefitt name continued a harmonious relationship with the elite.  In 1935, having previously taken ownership, H.P. Truefitt (the nephew of William Francis) moved the barbershop into a space occupied by Edwin Hill & Co. The move merged both barbershops and resulted in a newly formed and now historic name: Truefitt & Hill.

Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and William Thackeray all recognized Truefitt & Hill as a residence of luxury and style, while Sir Winston Churchill, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Charles Dickens, Fred Astaire, Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock frequented the barbershop during their lives. Truefitt & Hill has also been popular with hundreds of other icons in society, politics and the arts. In addition, it has had the distinction of serving as barbers and Royal Warrant holders to H.R.H., The Duke of Edinburgh and other members of The Royal Family for the past nine reigns.

Today the Truefitt & Hill flagship store can be found at 71 St. James Street. It remains true to its roots as it is nestled in one of the most elite neighborhoods in all of London. Other locations have also opened in North America. With over two centuries of tradition at its side, Truefitt & Hill continues to provide superior grooming experiences. With each stroke of the blade, with each pat of the brush, with each dab of cologne, the modern day gentleman prepares himself for the kind of greatness that only a Truefitt & Hill man can expect.
